Finding that Zen Place in the Garden

You were cut off in traffic on your way home from work after a stressful day. You finally get home to relax and you find an accident by your dog and a stack of bills by the front door….is it Friday yet?

Time to decompress! Go out and dig in the dirt! In fact, taking a moment to stop and smell the roses might just be good for your health. Studies have shown that gardening can help fight stress better than many other types of stress-reducing activities, not to mention it’s a great form of exercise!

Getting out in the fresh air and gardening may not be a trip to the Caribbean, but it may just be that little bit of relaxation you need. We challenge you to tell us someone who can resist a bright happy sunflower!

Getting started doesn’t take much effort…a few seeds, a plot of dirt and some water is really all you need. You can grow almost anything from flowers, and herbs to fruits and vegetables. Dare we say fresh tomatoes without your mouth watering?!

Quinsigamond Community College students know all about the joys of gardening. The school’s honor society students (Phi Theta Kappa) can usually be found in the college’s Live and Learn Greenhouse growing veggies, fruits, flowers and herbs for the community to enjoy.

Today is the official start of summer and the longest day of the year.  Go outside, enjoy the fresh air and if you haven’t dug in the dirt, what are you waiting for…get planting!
